Getting started
How does MatterScope work?
Start on the Explore tab, spin the dial to pick a molecule or element, and tap Explore. From there, tap any part of a 3D model — an atom in a molecule, a proton in a nucleus — to fall one layer deeper. Drag any model to rotate it.
Do I need an account or the internet?
No. There is no sign-up, and the app works entirely offline — even in Airplane Mode. All the science is bundled inside the app.
Common questions
Why are electrons drawn on rings?
That’s a deliberate teaching simplification. Electrons really occupy fuzzy probability clouds, and protons and neutrons are a churning mix of quarks and gluons. MatterScope labels each picture by scientific status so you always know how literally to take it.
What do the status labels mean?
- Established — well-confirmed by experiment.
- Simplified model — a useful teaching picture, not literal.
- Active research — real but still being pinned down.
- Speculative theory — proposed, not confirmed (e.g. string theory, preons).
How do I save something?
Tap the bookmark on any element, molecule or particle. It appears in the Saved tab, stored only on your device.
Is my data safe?
There is no data to worry about — the app collects nothing and requests no permissions. See the privacy policy for the details.
